Bottle Feeding: Plastic Vs Glass Bottle

Plastic baby bottles have been used for decades and are a staple in every moms feeding arsenal. In 2009 we started noticing a change in plastic bottle labeling by manufacturer; BPA free.

Most of us had never even heard of BPA and were unaware of its presence in the plastic containers.

BPA is Bisphenol A a chemical found to lead to some serious health issues when absorbed.

The FDA released a report in 2009 acknowledging the presence of "small amount" of BPA in plastic containers. The report stated that it was still safe for consumers.

Lets talk about the Health issues linked to BPA especially when heated:

• Behavioral problems,
• Cancers such as breast and prostate
• Reproductive problems such as infertility.

As a consumer what are we to do? Do we trust the new labels on plastic packages? From a parent perspective, how do we reduce our children exposure the Bisphenol? Is glass a safer alternative?

Glass bottles do not contain BPA and are a safer alternative. They tend to hold temperature better than plastic. Glass has been a trusted material for centuries. It is one of the greenest materials on the planet and is 100% recyclable. And it is safe: You don’t have to worry about BPA, lead, or other chemicals that can leach into liquids from plastic bottles plus water and beverages will taste better coming out of a glass bottle because glass is taste neutral--no unpleasant plastic or metallic taste. To be fair there are some drawbacks to using glass although it is gaining in popularity. Glass bottles are not as convenient to use. They can break and shatter easily which make them a concern around children. They are heavier and more cumbersome to carry around. You probably also noticed that their purchase will make a noticeable dent into your wallet. And that's because they are more expensive to manufacturer. Some public places such as pools, beaches and airplanes restrict the use or presence of glass containers which can be a problem.

While the Food and Drug Administration has approved plastic bottles for consumer use, there are still some lingering questions about plastic bottles versus glass bottles and which are the safest to use. After careful examination of the FDA and other scientific findings, it is up to you, the consumer, to decide which type of bottle is safest and most convenient for you.

Bottom line is opting to using glass is not an easy decision. Whether you stick to plastic or switch to glass here are a few tricks to keep in mind:

• Always use BPA free bottles especially the one with a 7 at the bottom of the bottle, they are the safest kind
• When selecting which glass bottle to purchase opt for those made from soda lime glass, same container glass used for wine bottles and other food storage containers or baby bottles are made from borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is known for its superior durability, chemical and heat resistance, and is excellent for use in chemical laboratory equipment and cookware. This allows the baby bottle to go from the freezer to boiling water pot without incident.
